Congratulations Obama - Photo from AP News
I am not a political analyst, so take what I say here as simply my opinion on the amazing and exciting 2008 Presidential Election. The fact that Barack Obama won this momentous election states that the USA may be getting past the crux of race vs. the issues, even when electing to the highest office in the land. The breadth of his win is amazing and it states that the United States is evolving in a new direction. Senator John McCain is a true patriot and I truly admire him and his unending service to our country; however, this election was not his time.
This event is so historic as it changes the way the citizens of the United States see itself, but also for people throughout the world as they will see the USA as being able to do what was thought impossible – to elect a liberal, non-White President. This election win is certainly a celebration and a high-point for many Americans, but especially for all African Americans, and for any colored person in the United States to see that the USA truly is a place where all things are possible.
For those who were at Grant Park or viewed his acceptance speech on TV, it was clear on Obama’s face the understanding of the solemn and serious task of tackling the very difficult obstacles that have broken down the United States over the past few years. This celebration event is perhaps the most subdued and sincere acceptance speech for a President Elect that I have ever seen. It shows that Obama understands that he is not walking into the White House that is “neat and tidy.”
With the ailing economy, the pursuit of new energy resources to end global warming, the elimination of foreign oil, reducing our insane health care costs, helping people to afford a college education, a method for peace in the Middle East and an end to terrorism, finding a way to win and end the ongoing two wars we are engaged in, and repairing the unfortunate but understandable disdain from many parts of the world towards the USA – it is clear that he has a lot on his plate.
Obama has survived the first few days of being President-Elect, and is already working on his transition team, cabinet, and is giving his first press release today (Friday 11/7.) Never have I been so excited and determined to see a candidate win. Even my mother and father stated that they have never been witness to an election like this since JFK was elected decades ago. Are we on the cusp of a generational moment like many saw in the 60’s? It is hard to say, but I have high hopes for Obama and his staff to make a difference.
The election of Obama is a transcendent generational event that garners such high hopes for the future of the USA and its people. Congratulations to Barack Obama, his family, his campaign staff, and to all of those who supported his race to the White House, oh, and let’s not forget his upcoming puppy (a labradoodle, right?) The duty to the entire USA is to work together. I hope that we can accomplish that task. The right attitude and the willingness to make some sacrifices to make the USA a better place has been asked of us before, lets try to meet that call. Yes, we can.
P.S. – Wouldn’t it be amazing to be the White House photographer? Can you imagine the amazing historical images that you would be able to compose? I wish it could be me.
